Lingering thoughts on 'Veronica Mars,' 'Gilmore Girls' and 'HIMYM'
So did you see that coming on Veronica Mars? (And yes, if you've not yet watched Tuesday's rape-mystery conclusion, you should probably head elsewhere.) This is pretty much the first time an obvious suspect turned out not to be a red herring, yes?
It was a pretty satisfying end to the first of this season's arcs, not least because for the first time in a mystery-resolving episode, Veronica was (partly) wrong about who the culprit was. The rape tag-team was something I didn't really see coming either, and if the explanation for Mercer and Moe's bond was a little murky -- they were guard and prisoner in an earlier version of episode two's prison experiment -- once that became clear, the payoff worked quite well.
It was also nice to see another woman -- Parker -- be the one to help Veronica out of her jam, rather than Keith or Logan (or even Wallace or Piz). Tough though Veronica is, her headlong runs at justice in the past two seasons have landed her in considerable danger, and her rescues both times have tended toward damsel-in-distress stuff. Given that she was trying to catch a rapist (excuse me, rapists) this time, though, it's fitting that a previous victim would come to Veronica's aid.
And what a way to introduce the next mystery arc. Ed Begley Jr. was great as Dean O'Dell, and I'm sorry to see him go. But there couldn't be a more classic setup to this mystery than the dean's discovery that his wife was cheating with Veronica's criminology prof. Anybody wanna bet Weevil gets hauled in as a suspect, since he found the body and his TV-installing fingerprints are all over the dean's office?
I wish I could say I was as happy with Tuesday's episode of Gilmore Girls, but alas, it's not the case. In the last couple weeks especially, I can see the machinery turning a little too plainly with regard to Luke and Lorelai.
It feels very much like the writers are steering the ship back to a Luke-Lorelai coupling, with Luke's recent superdad efforts being his way of proving to Lorelai that he's capable of commitment. (A friend offers up another valid theory: Having already lost Lor, he's clinging to April for fear that he'll be alone for the rest of his life.) I actually kind of like the new Christopher, so I really hope he's not ultimately just another obstacle for L&L to overcome.
And, speaking of Christopher, since when are the people of Stars Hollow so bloody insular? I get that they were rooting for Luke and Lorelai, but it really seems like it's time to move on.
More gears grinding: I fear Rory is headed for a hookup-regret scenario with Marty, sometime down the road when Logan has to break a date for work for the 12th time and Rory's new friends have gone off to be annoying elsewhere. Although given how deeply grating a character Lucy is, I was halfway rooting for "Boyfriend" and Rory to get together last night.
Finally, how 'bout that flash-forward at the end of How I Met Your Mother on Monday? Others have already parsed the scene at Barney's brother's wedding, so I'll just say I agree with those who read it as Ted and Robin have broken up by a year from now. Mostly it's because they each said they'd stay later than 9 at the reception, rather than "we'll stay." (Also glad to see Marshall and Lily have apparently gone ahead and married.)
There's enough wiggle room there -- particularly given the way Ted and Robin were dancing -- for the writers to change their minds if they want, but it's nice to see the show take a chance like that.

I mostly agreed with your analysis except the Rory-Marty part. Marty is fine with the grating Lucy but he is definitely not Rory material. The best thing this show can do now is to keep Rory & Logan going strong. They have fantastic chemistry and are a agreat couple. Rory leaving Logan for anyone, let alone Marty, would be a colossal "jump the shark" fiasco.
I agree sue...Logan and Rory are too cute and the chemistry jumps through the TV screen! I am very disappointed this season, I kept yelling at the TV asking why Luke hasn't gone into his normal rantings, before this season he had at least one rant every Tues!
I actually like Logan too. It's just that Lucy is soooo annoying that I want to see bad things happen to her.
But I agree that it would pretty well wreck that portion of the show. Just some crazy talk on my part.
Gilmore Girls-no comment. this show has gotten repetative and lame. can't even muster the energy to watch it.
Veronica Mars-still love that show, but i just wasn't feeling the revel on this mystery. I don't think there was enough time to really care about the characters. I was devestated when Beaver turned out to be evil, but that was because i really liked him, but i understood how he got that way. With this, i forgot Moe and Mercer had the prisoner/guard thing going and i wasn't really shocked. It was nice to see a change up and VM be wrong for once and for the damsel in distress to be rescued by another damsel. oh and i loved the end, with logan walking in the jail, clenched fists and all. i am looking forward to the next mystery and seeing more of Weevil.
HIMYM-interesting jump forward. i, too, ***umed that Ted and Robyn were together, but excellent points here and i see how it could be the other way. it was impossible to top last weeks episode, so a foray into the complicated psyche of Barney was a good move. I simply, cannot get enough of that guy. And seeing the black, gay counterpart of Barney was halirious. I liked all the 'not quite saying it' comparisons of Barney's shock and horror at his brother settling down to the general reaction towards ****sexuality. nice. Pretty much love this show.
Logan and Rory! Give me a break! I want to hurl everytime I see them on screen together. He is a first cl*** tool. Everytime I see him I just want to smack that smarmy self-satisfied arrogant look off his face. Rory's new friends are annoying, but at least they're supposed to be annoying. That's the point. I don't necessarily want Rory and Marty to get together, but she should want to get together with him and be angry that he is with the vapid Lucy the same way he was angry when she got together with the unworthy Logan. What goes around comes around.
I disagree with almost everything said. I love Gilmore Girls and Christopher and Lorali seems forced. Christopher tries way to hard, which I think the writers are going for (if so, great job). He doesn't belong with Lorali and it's pretty clear by the last episode that he doesn't fit into her daily life in Stars Hallow. I like they this relationship will finally be exhausted, since they have had the on/off thing since season 1.
Rory's friends are the worst. Get rid of them, they serve no purpose, except to annoy the avid viewer. Does anyone really see Rory hanging out with these girls? And Logan, although I like him I really think they should break up, Rory has so much to do after college it doesn't seem like the fitting conclusion for the show, so break them up now, while there is still time.
Luke is great and I thought I would hate him having a kid, but it works. Him and Lorali need to have more interaction, because even if they are fighting or getting along, the scenes they have together are the best.
The veronica mars episode was fantastic this week. I felt like i was watching a season finale, and the season is only beginning. I love that show way too much, and the resolution was absolutely brilliant. Only the faithful watchers noticed something between Mercer and Moe in the prison guard episode, so i think it was a very fitting finale for the reliogious watchers of the show. And logan in prison again... awesome
Gilmore Girls: I think Rory's new friends are perfect for her how can anyone say that they don't fit with her. They are extremely eccentric which completely fits in with every other character on the show. Also, although Marty may still love Rory they will never be together because she fits in perfectly with Logan's world, even if he is a jerk most of the time, which isn't completely his fault if you look at his upbringing. Also, the Luke and Lorelai relationship is over. Lorelai is going to remain with Christopher and Luke is most likely going to end up with April's mom. These unions of nuclear families does not sit well with me and I think the show "jumped the shark" when Chris and Lorelai married.
