Halloweentown_01_240With Return to Halloweentown, Disney Channel proves that it's mastered the magic formula for creating upbeat original movies that tap into tweens' not-so-secret desires.

The fourth installment in the popular franchise packs teen witch Marnie Cromwell (Sara Paxton) off to Witch University in Halloweentown. Finally she can embrace her magical heritage and cut loose -- well, except for a few irritating things: brainy, younger brother Dylan (J. Paul Zimmerman) is still too smart for his own good; her mom Gwen (Judith Hoag) is calling every few minutes out of worry; and there's this new rule that you can't use magic on campus.

Huh?

With the portal between the worlds making travel inevitable, Witch University has lost students to the mortal world and therefore opened enrollment to non-witches. No magic means an even playing field for all students. Only, some students, like the fashionista Sinister sisters (Kristy Wu, Kellie Cockrell, Katie Cockrell) get away with magic all the time, whether it's cheating on an assignment or having lovesick boys cater to them.

But Marnie has a far bigger worry that involves a millennial-old prophecy about her and of course, saving the world -- or at least Halloweentown.

While young fans will welcome the ongoing adventures of the Cromwell clan, they may take a minute to adjust to Paxton, who steps into Marnie's shoes after Kimberly J. Brown played the role for the first three films. Not to worry though. The usually blonde Paxton makes a decent brunette, has tween cred (Darcy's Wild Life, Aquamarine) and has a goofy vulnerability that balances the larger-than-life themes.

Debbiereynolds_halloweentowEveryone else (with the exception of the absent Sophie normally played by Emily Roeske) is back though, especially the cheerful Debbie Reynolds as Grandma Aggie and the ever-popular Lucas Grabeel who set pre-teen hearts aflutter in Halloweentown High and High School Musical. Ethan gets his flirt on this time around, although the boy-girl action never passes beyond a G rating. Naturally, new faces make an appearance, most notably Summer Bishil as Aneesa, Marnie's sassy friend and RA who just happens to be a genie.

Storywise, magic as a metaphor for growing pains and teenage ostracism isn't anything new even before Hogwarts became popular. Kids will identify with Marnie, who seems pretty darn normal in these odd circumstances, while parents will appreciate poor Gwen's empty nest syndrome and a couple winks to Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie.

This Halloweentown installment is flashier and more colorful, mainly because of the vibrant visual effects that have come a long way from the original 1998 film. While talk about magic bogs down the action at times, at least the practice of magic is snappier than previous films since the witches are less reliant on bulky, wordy spells and instead accomplish spells with a mere gesture or furrowed brow.

Overall, Return to Halloweentown is a charming addition to the Disney Channel resume that mixes elements of adventure, everyday teen uncertainty, a pop-friendly look and likeable characters. Anything beyond that isn't really necessary for success, but sure makes it more fun.

i was disappointed when kimberly did not play the role in this movie...

it would be like harry potter not being played by Daniel Jacob Radcliffe.

i think walter (disney) is turning over in his grave

i think this movie is wonderful it has a lot of funny and good moments. I loved the ending

I thought it was terrible that Sarah Paxton starred in the movie instead of Kimberly Brown. While she is a good actress, Kimberly was incredible. I think the only reason they switched her off the movie is because this would be the movie seen by the most people, and the media wants us and the world to believe American girls are supposed to be skinny. This ws the only thing I disliked about the creation of the movie. Have a nice day!

I thought the movie Halloweentown Returns was not as good as 1, 2 or 3. It could have to do with since Kimberly J. Brown wasn;t in it! I liked it better and she could act the part better. Paxton I don't think did the best of Job and it just kind of ruined the movie I thought. Plus some of the scenes were horrible acting by Paxton. Hey Disney Channel If you make another Halloweentown I would say out with Paxton and wait for Kimberly J. Brown.

Disney has always been my old standby for Halloween family specials. They really dropped the ball with this "Mean Girls" adaptation. Is it "One Tree Hilloween Town" now? What happened to Kimberly Brown? She was great as Marney.

Big disappointment.

My favorite part in the movie was when Marnie went back in time and met Splendora Cromwell, her Grandma Aggie. Sara Paxton looks a bit weird with her brunette hair..I liked her blond better. Whatever..

The movie would've been soooooo much better with Kimberly J Brown! She was great in the previous 3 Halloweentown movies!! My best friend said that Kimberly J Brown died in a car accident!! How'd he know that? I thought she died..NOBODY TELLS ME ANYTHING ANYMORE!!! *runs in circles crying*

I think Sara was awesome as Marnie... I know for a fact the reason Kimberly didnt play Marnie was because she truned them down for another film... Check it on imdb if u want its true... Sara did a good job. And poo to everyone who says she didnt :-p !!!!

Paxton played the role great and Brown was not missed by me at least. The plo of this third installment in the halloweentown series had a more complex plot and further gave the characters more depth. TRhis movie puts the predecesors to shame. It would have been better if "Aggy" played a bigger role in the movie but I ***ume Disney is saving the untied knots and Aggy's presence for the fifth movie- can't wait!

What ever happened to Kimberly? We would have liked her in it better than Sara.Overall the movie was great. Keep it up

I think Kimberly J. Brown should have played Marnie in the movie instead of Sara Paxton and I also think that Aggie should have played in the movie more.
