Pretzel day!
"I wake up every morning in a bed that's too small, drive my daughter to a school that's too expensive. Then I go to work, to a job for which I get paid too little. But on pretzel day -- well, I like pretzel day."
Stanley, I am right there with you. So much so that I'm willing to overlook the mildly disappointing Dwight-and-Ryan thread from Thursday's Office. Not that it wasn't funny: I mean, "Wrong! Flash floods" and "What is the Dharma Initiative?" and "Just as you have planted that seed ..." were gold. But it was a little too much concentrated Dwightness to take in one sitting.
I just liked the action back at Scranton HQ and the squeaky-chair story in Stamford better, is all. Michael and Stanley's high five? Genius. There are few things that will bring antagonists together like "no cuts." And I really loved Jan forcing Pam to keep tabs on Michael. If I may flatter myself and presume an Office writer might read this (I know, fat chance), please: Make Pam's display of the log to the camera a recurring bit.
And then there was Jim and Pam's phone call. I'm continually amazed at how pitch-perfect the show's writers are in exploring their awkward, longing relationship. Their phone call was uncomfortable, then sweet and funny, and then kind of weird again right there at the end. But I don't think we need to read anything into Pam's concern for Ryan, other than she knew he'd been with Dwight all day. Because A) Pam doesn't seem like the type of person to go after someone else's (Kelly, in this case) boyfriend; B) I have to believe Pam is pretty well done dating co-workers for a while; and C) that would just make for another love triangle involving Pam, and the writers are too smart to do that.
And then there was:
- Kelly trying to explain "Lazy Sunday" to Michael in the pretzel line.
- Jim singing The Cardigans' "Lovefool" to Karen as retaliation for her squeaky-chair offensive.
- Just have to mention this again. Dwight: "Just as you have planted that seed in the ground, I'm going to plant my seed in you." Ryan: "I don't think you know what you're saying."
- Pam: "What time is it there?" and "It felt far." Heart-breaking.
- Kevin drumming and singing along to "Rock & Roll Part 2."
So what about you? Do you look forward to pretzel day as much as Stanley?

I look forward to pretzel day now! I agree about the Dwight and Ryan bit. It was hilarious, but it could have been cut back a little. Michael's slackerdom was great, made even better by Pam's observation sheet. But I have to say that I do not like the stuff with Jim right now. I don't care how cute they might be trying to make those bits with him, he just needs to come back. That scene with him and Pam on the phone was so sad. I'll end with this gem: "Never sleep with your boss...I'm so glad Jan and I only got to second base."
I wish I had a pretzel day at work - perfect for a Pennsylvania office eh? (I guess here in Boston we could have Baked Bean day?) I also am not psyched about the stuff with Jim in Stanford right now. It's kind of funny, but for some reason I don't cotton to the female co-worker (maybe it's as simple as I don't like her hair). He doesn't have to find a girl in every office to flirt with.
i like the jim in the other office bit. it is interesting because there-his co-worker has feeling for him and he is the oblivious one. it is a nice turn. but i do agree. i miss his relationship with dwight and with pam. jim can say so much with just a look, and he doesn't get to do that so much in stanford, because everyone there is "normal"
i liked seeing a little more of Ryan in this episode, but i could do with a little less dwight.
I loved this episode. Dwight and Stanley were just hillarious and I was really glad that they spotligthed them a little bit in this one. They should do that more often (and ditto with Creed).
The stuff with Jim and Karen's alleged chair was just endearing and side-splittingly funny at the same time. Singing Lovefool was both brilliantly cruel and downright hillarious. I like the whole thing between Jim and Karen, and I want to see where that's gonna go (even though I'm dying to see him finally reconnect with Pam).
One last thing, though, I love the consistency on the show. Last season Jim explained what was it that happened when Michael got an excess of sugar in his veins and we finally got to see it happen exactly like he had said it would. Loved it.
Brilliant ep. altogether.
We need a pretzel day where I work. All we get is donuts on birthdays and resignations. The excitement drops with the fact that we work next door to a donut shop.
