'Smallville' Kneels Before Zod

SmallvilleIt's hard to get a feel for a season of Smallville based on its premiere. Usually, with a summer to plan, the show almost always starts off strong. There's a liberal dipping into the special effects budget, some big drama setting up this year's conflict, etc.

Then, suddenly, it's three weeks later and we're enduring a filler episode about Lana joining a vampire sorority.

Yet, this season things already seem a bit off.

Sure, the premiere had some nice effects: I like the way the Phantom Zone resembled "St. Elsewhere's" take on Purgatory, but the rock Clark broke with his body when Lex/Zod was beating him looked as styrofoam as they come.

But there was a definite break of tone between the beginning end-of-Earth-as-we-know-it portion and the secondary putting-things-back-together segment. This was made especially awkward with most of the main characters spending so much time apart, except for a couple of cursory scenes here and there.

I also find myself wanting them to pull a Marissa Cooper with Lana and kill her off. Really, her character has served every possible dramatic purpose and should just go away. At this point we have more use for Chloe than Lana. At least Chloe was our gateway for bringing Jimmy Olsen into the mix.

And we're all for Jimmy Olsen. Plus, it's extra fun for comics fans that he's played by Aaron Ashmore, brother of Shawn Ashmore, Bobby Drake (aka Iceman) in the X-Men movies.

Still, the arrivial of Jimmy on the scene was a bit anticlimactic, considering last season we got Professor Milton Fine/Brainiac, one of Superman's bigger villians.

Maybe things will pick up when Oliver Queen/Green Arrow shows up in a couple of weeks.

I agree with everything especially the whole killing off Lana. She hasn't added anything valuable in 2 years. Even with the negatives to the episode, I still found myself enjoying this one more than any episode from Season 4 or 5.

Didn't zod "die" a little too quickly? I mean, that's what I was hyped for the most, and then he's gone halfway through the ep. Would have probably been just as dramatic if Lana stabbed him with that knife.

Ah, Lana dead. Now that's the stuff dreams are made of. I have to admit she's infinitely more interesting and less wooden when she's with Lex...but then I think that of anyone with a scene with Michael Rosenbaum. And Chloe and Clark. There be hints of jealousy from our BDA. He gets a clue about our fave reporter, finally!! Just as long as we're not treated to some asinine of keeping them apart for ages for no reason, it's all good.

Lois unconcious! Hehehe. Perfect.

"Kneel before Zod" - even more perfect!

I have to agree the writers have been disrepectful to character, but I'm tired off all the Lana bashing!

In the mythology, she helped Clark and encouraged him to become Superman, rather she's just being p***ed on from one guy to another. I want them to bring the Comic version of Lana to Smallville!

Also, Lois is suppose to be driven, and hard-working. They made her look like a party-girl, drunk, slacker.

I think SV has run its course. The first half of season 5 was amazing, but its been downhill since episode 100.

I once was a huge fan of this show in the beginning but as the story lines changed, it got dull and lackluster last season. It seems like everybody and their uncle knows about Clarks powers except Lana and somehow whenever it gets close, she's either unconscious or there's a time/space continuum thing occuring and the memory is lost. I knew it had ran out of steam for me when I taped it last week to watch it and right after the intro and a few minutes, I cut off the tape. I wasn't hooked on the "Clark has a cold" subject matter. Furthermore, it would behoove the writers to make Clark use more common sense than emotions based on last season's dismall character development of Clark. Many of those scenarios Clark was in surrounding Lana could easily have been resolved with some simple words but instead was made so convaluted that I was beginning to lose interest in such poor writing. ANd this season's premiere episode didn't help its cause. There was no 'mmph' that gave any credence to the hype. I had no feel of threat or endangerment or intensity with the show like if you were watching 24. Maybe Lana should die off because right now the writers have made her sullen and dismissive. Since they've split up the Lana/Clark thing, I just don't care and this Lex/Lana thing, I just don't care. It was more interesting when she was dry humping the late football quarterback. Maybe she should get killed off right after she discover Clark's been saving her petulant behind for all of these years.

I've been a fan from the start and I agree that the shows and plots have changed over the years but I think it is probably a hard balance to keep with the history of the story and keep the network happy. I think (with a few excpetions) the past two years have been pretty good. I just hope that the network gives them notice if they are going to pull the plug so they can wrap it up with Clark turning into Superman - or at least right before he does. It appears the writters, etc. have been gearing up for that the past two years - just in case. I think if they would forget the possibility of that the story lines would be somewhat better. I'm just curious of what will be the deciding thing that drives Lex to the "Super Villian" he becomes?

I am dedicated to te show so it is hard for me to say anything negative, but I have to agree alot of the excitement is gone. Also I have to agree that Lana's character has been quite cold as of late. Plus understanding minimizing the special effects have led to dull endings. There have been no big fight scenes at the end. For example, the big promo for batista. Well I'm expecting a good fight at the end but all we got was one zap and the phantom was gone. Come on Smallville. I;ll always be a fan, and hope the show last for years to come, but for it's survival and new viewership things will have to change. A kinder Lana to Clark, some cameos from John Schneider, and more interaction between the core characters, Clark, Lana, chloe, Martha, Lex, and Lionel.

The show is God-awful. In terms of cohesion, story-telling, continuity, character development and character consistency, it's suffered so much that I find it difficult to compare the series now to the promise of the premiere.

My children are pointing things out that really just make me despair about lost opportunities. Their major beef, Clark's character. When I was asked why Clark would hurt his friend I had no answer. When I was asked if I had a secret that so needed protecting that I would allow a friend to be harmed, I honestly felt I should stop allowing them to watch the show. That's a hard question to give a good answer to an 11-yo.

Tough stuff aside, I really wish more talent was behind the show. I hope they put it out of its misery soon.

I was really disappointed w/ S6 premiere. The flying...just awful. Throw more $$ at it at least.
