Anything but the singing on 'Celebrity Duets'

Jairodriguez_celebrityduets_240Yeah, I can't really explain it, but I'm kind of enjoying Celebrity Duets. Maybe it's seeing recognizable people get a thrill from playing pop star even though you know this can't be the highlight of anyone's career. It's definitely not the singing, because that part of the show barely registers with me.

This week's musings:

Lucy Lawless & Dionne Warwick: I always mean to pay attention to Lucy, but somehow my mind wanders off and suddenly it's the end of the song and I realize I don't remember a thing about it. Instead, I can review her hemlines. She started off Week One with demure, long gowns. Then someone noticed she's a talk drink of water and put her in backless dresses with go-go skirts. This time, it's a more demure one right below the knee. She should go back to the short ones. Those stick in the mind.

Skating with Celebrities winner and husband stealer Kristy Swanson is the audience, as is Simon Cowell's girlfriend. After Tuesday's Rock Star, we're kind of hoping Dave Navarro shows up.

Alfonso Ribeiro & Deniece Williams: They should really think about replacing Paula Abdul on American Idol with Marie Osmond. Actually, I have a personal theory that they're auditioning her to do just that. Sure, Marie has had her problems, but they're much more relatable than Paula's, which we still haven't precisely diagnosed. Plus, Marie actually has something to contribute to the critiques.

Anyway, Alfonso gets called on being "inappropriate" by both Marie and David Foster. She doesn't like one of his signature moves that excludes the other singer, and David says you should never use illness as an excuse. Is he still sick? I thought that was last week. This is like a soap opera; apparently a storyline can drag on for months.

Carly Patterson & Jesse McCartney: Hey, it's the kid from Summerland. Is he going to make out with Carly on stage? Could this stray into Justin Timberlake/Janet Jackson territory? No, it's much more G-Rated than that. Maybe a little PG. We're only going to get some suggestive looks. They do have some chemistry though. I'm seeing dream casting for High School Musical: The Return.

Hal Sparks & Dennis DeYoung: Out of all the contestants, Hal is the one that I see spending evenings in front of his closet mirror singing into a hairbrush like it's a microphone. I don't know if he wraps his head in a towel or a partially taken off turtleneck and pretends its his long, flowing hair. That part is optional. But the first bit? I'd put $50 on it.

Cheech Marin & Aaron Neville: I thought Cheech was eliminated last week, so for a second there I wonder if there's been a recount or if he took a hit out on Lea Thompson so he could come back. The judges are surprised he's still there too and do their best to make sure he won't be back.

Jai Rodriguez & Taylor Dane: As the "culture expert" on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Jai's role has always been a bit undefined beyond making mix tapes and writing thank you notes. Clearly, he was just biding time until he could win Celebrity Duets. Then again, we thought the same about Jillian Barberie and Skating with Celebrities and do you see her in the audience tonight? No, no you don't.

Marie dares to criticize him and even host Wayne Brady steps in to defend those elements beyond his control. He's still Little Richard's favorite son, but David isn't impressed either, so his fall grace might come well before the finale.

That's all Kristy Swanson can do...sit in audiences of FOX shows. (She was also in the American Idol audience.)

While Jillian Barberie has been on the Tonight Show, Tyra Banks' Show, and a guest star on "Fashion House".

Marie O. Why did they chooser her? Little Richard makes no sense and David at least offers real help for the celebs.

I saw Lucy tonight (Friday) in long gown. It was beautiful, and she was beautiful in it!

I must say, Lucy is my favorite. She's so down-to-earth. A normal person like me just can't help but love that. :-) Not to mention that fact that she's gorgeous and sings well.

Honestly, I watch the show just to see who the next guest singer would be. The show fails to entertain me beyond that. But, here's my view on the judges:

Little Richard -- need to be canned.

Marie - tries too hard to be critical (sometimes it is not necessary)

David - hard to say anything about him b/cause he sits so close to Little R.

Wayne Brady - What's his line anyway? enough said.

And for the singers - I think Hal Sparks is the absolute worst (yes worst than Cheech). Jai would win and Alphonso would be second.

And as for the show itself - will not be aired another season (but I could be wrong, people like a good laugh every now and then).
