The two albums of 'American Idol' Adam Lambert
I'm sure by now you have heard about "American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert's indie album versus his studio album.
The indie album is called "On With the Show" and is the one Lambert recorded before his Idol journey and is going to be released now that he's a big star. Lambert is trying to distance himself from said album because he says his 19 Entertainment album due out later this year is the public's first chance to hear what his music really sounds like.
Conversely, Hi Fi Recordings, the indie label responsible for "On With the Show," is absolutely ecstatic about the upcoming album and insists that Lambert helped co-write eight of the 11 songs on the album.
Here's what I wonder: is Lambert really trying to distance himself from his former work? Or is it more that the "American Idol" iron fist is coming crashing down on this indie label for stealing its thunder and is putting the screws to Lambert to denounce his former work?
I'm inclined to think it's the latter. This wouldn't be the first time 19 Entertainment has been kind of controlling. Also, I have finally heard Lambert's single "Want," one of the 11 songs from "On With the Show," and I have to say... I like it. It's powerful and shows off Adam's beautiful voice, without getting into the screamy stuff that I can only take in small doses.
The song can be heard here, if you haven't heard it yet. What do you guys think?

I love Adam's song Want and can't wait to get either of his albums.
Want is very Meh. It's a bit like a contemporary wanna be Beatles track without a real catch to it and has neither Adam's signature OTT sound or signature lyrics. And yes, I do think Adam would like to distance himself from this release. And it all has to do with branding. This is a very sucky thing for Hi-Fi to be doing. They're screwing with Adam's brand before he's even had a chance to create it with a new album of his own. I don't object to them trying to make a few bucks, but i think they ought to wait until a few months after his first post-idol album comes out. Also, if the list of songs TMZ published is true, this is obviously a "hey let's throw everything and the kitchen sink" into a track list and not something they had ever planned to do.
In addition to Want, they've got Crawl Through Fire (which is totally a 70's rock sound), Kiss and Tell (which I'd love to get a better recording of) which is dance music, and some Citizen Vein songs (which ****es me off that the band isn't listed) that have a harder rock sound. So you've got a total mix of experimental sounds Adam was working with. Not a bad concept but it really knocks down Hi-Fi's claim that they always intened to release an album because this is NOT what you do with a new artist.
I don't doubt 19 Entertainment is unhappy with this -- but no one is twisting Adam's arm to distance himself from it. It's obvious that "Want," while not necessarily a bad song, is not Adam's signature sound. His father has said that Adam was frustrated that he had little to no creative control over a lot of that stuff. Furthermore, if you're complaining in this blog about Adam's "screamy stuff," then it's obvious you don't get it and you never will. So go back to listening to your Beatles-lite if that makes you happy, and leave Adam to the rest of his millions of fans to enjoy.
Why are people referring to this as Adam's "previously recorded album," as if these songs were always meant to be put together to make a cohesive record? Isn't it clear that HiFi/Wilshire are simply throwing together as much as they can get their hands on, the demos he's done in session work and his work with Monte Pittman (which is already available for free on MySpace and YouTube)? This is a blatant and quite clumsy attempt to cash in on the fame of someone who happened to have done obscure session work for them years ago, same work that nobody ever gave a damn about until he became an overnight sensation. If they really wanted the best for Adam, they would wait to release it. They wouldn't be acting like someone who realizes his cousin by marriage three times removed suddenly won a reality show of her own and who just has to immediately butt in as the recurring "best friend" character stealing all the good lines and generally outstaying his welcome.
I've never rooted for the big corporation before, but I hope RCA shows them how it's done. These guys are pathetic.
Adam's older material was made for stage musicals, used to be on his MySpace and some still are on youtube. THAT is very different than music made for listening on a CD. Adam has changed his style and his current music is being made for the recording artist he has become. And Adam 19Entertainment works only with the very best of the best-Adam totally is very happy with them FYI
The music industry is BIG business! And, I say ...do what feels right... for you. If you want to buy "Want" ...do it (I LOVE the song, BTW)! If you want to buy the HiFi album ... do it! If you want to wait for Adam's new album in the Fall ... then wait with excitement and anticipation! But, don't deprive yourself of the joy of listening to Adam's voice/new material when you've got the chance to hear him now. It takes months for a new album's release ...and, I don't know about you, but I need more Adam now! For me, I'm going to help make Adam rich no matter what. I LOVE how Adam's voice makes me feel, I LOVE how creative and brilliant he is, and most of all, I LOVE how genuinely sincere and sweet he is with his success.
HiFi is releasing old material post Idol and the title is Show Goes On is deliberately misleading. Adam has moved on from the theater stage to now in 2009 a new music style and made for recording, not for stage. Hi Fi is definitely greedily cashing in on Adam's name and releasing old material post Idol as 'first albulm" is disgutingly unethical even if legal. Adam's Official First CD at Thanksgiving in The Fall will be his current music.
Um, so what if Adam Lambert did write some of these songs? They've only been available on YouTube for over a year. The only song Lambert DENIED writing was Want. I love how media outlets like MTV are giving this Heckler idiot a platform. If he was so hot on Lambert's talent, why didn't he release his stuff before he became famous on American Idol? This Heckler guy is a blatant opportunist. Short story. Lambert was struggling. He sang some songs for Heckler as a session singer. He wrote some songs for himself. Somehow this m***ive douchebag Heckler got his hands on the lot of them and put some on an album to make a quick buck without telling Lamber or 19 which ones he was using. It's obvious to anyone following this developing nonsense that this guy is a publicity hound. Adam is now famous and should have the right to put out his debut album before the jokers put out old, unpolished demos of Adam singing. Love Adam think Hi Fi are sleezy.
I can't stand "Want"(too sappy). I've heard "Glamorize and "Crawl thru Fire" (very sexy). My favorite is "Pop Goes the Camera". I have said before that I would like Adam to put that on his album. It has a cool techno sound. Please everyone, Google these and listen to them for FREE. If you like it, buy it. If Adam wants to be really cool, he will take his "substantial royalties" and donate them to a charity that HiFi doesn't like.
Give Adam and HiFi a break. RCA is totally telling Adam what to say. We just hope that any negativity doesn't end up against him. The press is starting to paint a different picture. Us fans will SUPPORT Adam hands down if he's being paid.
