'American Idol' Movie Songs Wish List
The theme for "American Idol" this week is Songs of Cinema. I'm not sure if that means songs that were featured in movies or songs written specifically for a movie. Either way, I used the AFI 400 Nominated Songs list. They were the 400 nominees used to create the AFI 100 Years, 100 Songs list.
Lil Rounds
For Lil, I think there are a number of songs she could do really well. I would love to see a retro ballad like "Stormy Weather" (from Stormy Weather in 1943). I could also see "To Sir with Love" from the 1967 movie of the same name. But my first choice for her is "All that Jazz" from Chicago in 2001. I want a flapper outfit and her cute bobbed hair and lots of sultriness.
Kris Allen
I'm of two minds on Kris this week. I kind-of want a slower song where he can be all cute and schmoopy, like "Somewhere" from 1961's West Side Story or "If I Only Had a Brain/Heart/Nerve" from 1939's Wizard of Oz. I also kind-of want an up-tempo rock out number like "Old Time Rock n Roll" from Risky Business in 1983 or "Johnny B Goode" from Back to the Future in 1985. Wouldn't you just love it if Kris got up there and was all, "Uh, this's a blues riff in B, watch me for the changes and, uh, try and keep up" and then goes into the Johnny B Goode riff? That would be AWESOME.
Matt Giraud
I think Matt could dress all 1950s and really tear it up on "Luck Be a Lady" from 1955's Guys & Dolls, but I think if he really wants to get down and be fun, he should wear grey pants, a white shirt and a vest and sing "Twist & Shout" from Ferris Bueller's Day Off in 1986.
Anoop Desai
I think Anoop is in trouble this week, so either he should do something cute like "Rainbow Connection" from The Muppet Movie in 1979 or "A Wink and a Smile" from Sleepless in Seattle in 1993 or he should go down in a blaze of glory and do "Stuck in the Middle with You" from Reservoir Dogs, perhaps while torturing a cop. I kid, I kid. But wouldn't it be cool if he did that song on Quentin Tarantino week?
Danny Gokey
There are two songs I would really like to see Danny do. I think "I'm a Believer" from Shrek in 2001 would be really cute, if not vocally challenging. However, my top pick for Danny is "Come What May" from 2001's Moulin Rouge. I think he could really soar on this song and I'm not even the biggest Danny fan.
**Author's note: I have a lot of choices for Adam and Allison because I am becoming some kind of crazy fangirl for the two of them.**
Adam Lambert
I either want to see Adam dress slicked down and Elvis-y like he did on Smokey's week and sing either "Singin' in the Rain" from the movie of the same name in 1952 or "My Funny Valentine" from Pal Joey in 1957. Or I wnat to see Adam just go all nutso on us with one of these four songs: "Suicide is Painless" from M*A*S*H in 1970, "Springtime for Hilter" from The Producers in 1968, "Bohemian Rhapsody" from Wayne's World in 1992 or "The Time Warp" from The Rocky Horror Picture Show in 1975. Couldn't you JUST see him doing the opening of "The Time Warp," the part that Riff Raff sings? I think it would be amazing. I also happen to think Adam would make a kick-ass Dr. Franknfurter, just btw.
Allison Iraheta
I feel like this is Allison's week to come out in a fancy dress with her hair all curled and sing a powerful ballad, such as "Over the Rainbow" from Wizard of Oz, "The Way We Were" from the 1973 movie of the same name, "Evergreen" from A Star is Born in 1976, "Unchained Melody" from 1990's Ghost, or "Somewhere Out There" from An American Tail in 1986. Either that, or she should come out and slink it up with "Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)" from Dick Tracy in 1990. I think her beautiful alto throatiness would kill that song. That might be a bit grown up for her though.
Check out our friend Richard Rushfield's picks over at the LA Times Idol Tracker blog here. It's hilarious because the only cross-overs we have are "Rainbow Connection" (though he has it for Danny and I have it for Anoop) and "Suicide is Painless" for Adam Lambert.

I hope that you are back this week doing the live blog!
God, your song suggestions suck.
I am back this week, Jason! What a nice thing to say.
YesbutNo, what would you suggest?
I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.
For another list -- three, in fact, visit us at ALOTT5MA. We want "Live and Let Die" or Prince for Lambert ...
my dream song for Adam would be Dont You Forget About Me from The Breakfast Club
Your song suggestions are very interesting. Especially "Suicide is painless" for Adam. Spot-on! I would also like him to do something from "Jesus Christ-Superstar" as he has that perfect rock opera voice. Allison really does need to do a ballad this week, it's time.
Danny should do Against the Odds by Phil Collins
Kris-How Deep is your love,from Sat.Night Fever
Matt - Kiss from a Rose, Batman
Adam - Purple Rain
Adam- LIVE and LET DIE
Allison- The ROSE
