Recap: 'American Idol' trims to 10

By Daniel Fienberg

March 19, 07:17 PM

Kristyleecook_americanidol7_top11_2American Idol probably shouldn't have done a second night of Beatles songs. But who would pay the price on Wednesday (March 19) for Tuesday's mistakes? Who would be this season's last contestant to miss out on the empty arenas of the American Idol Tour? Let's find out...

8:57 p.m. ET. Poor skankazoid. I'd really hoped you were going to win $500,000. And poor me for being entrapped by FOX into having to watch the waning moments of Moment of Truth each week.

8:58 p.m. Oh good gravy. We're going to do the call-in questions again? Why can't you just admit that it didn't work and move on, Idol?

8:59 p.m. This season's mentors will include Dolly Parton, Mariah Carey, Andrew Lloyd Webber and... Neil Diamond. Tell me that's a theme night! If David Cook sings "America," he will automatically be my favorite for the rest of the season. In fact, whoever sings "America" will be my new favorite.

9:00 p.m. Last year, 25,000 songs were submitted for the coronation and the best song they could find was the grammatically confusing, musically mundane "This Is My Now." Is there any chance you can do worse this year, America?

9:01 p.m. Gee, Presumptive American Idol Winner David Archuleta. I'd never thought that "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" was such a scary and threatening song. I'm not sure it's quite as fun a song, though, as Chikezie thinks it is.

9:03 p.m. It's Group Sing time and there are plenty of small details to catch. There's Ramiele Malubay basically punting on the second half of her duet with Brooke White, who then appears to trip getting out of the shot. Then there's the camera mistakenly panning away from Kristy Lee Cook and then having to whip-pan back. Then there's Amanda Overmyer's lone contribution to the entire medley, a sneering, ghoulish line of "The End." And finally, was that Kevin Covais and Jon Peter Lewis sitting together in the crowd? Eraserhead's Baby and Pen Boy together? This could be the best padded episode ever.

9:09 p.m. Before kicking off the recap of Tuesday's show, Ryan admits that the contestants "really took us for a ride," which in the case of most of them wasn't such a compliment. I still don't understand Simon's problem with "Blackbird" (in principle, not Carly Smithson's interpretation of it) nor do I get why the judges weren't harsher on Jason Castro.

9:12 p.m. Ryan shows us a nice plush Couch of Safety and the steely Stools of Ignominy. Brooke is called out first. She isn't flapping her arms wildly and spinning and she does a good job of feigning worry before Ryan puts her into the Top 10. Brooke whoops and pumps her fists. Carly's up next and apparently viewers were every bit as confused by "Blackbird" as Simon. She's in the Bottom Three.

Carlysmithson_americanidol7_top11_29:14 p.m. "America definitely got it wrong," Paula complains. Randy blames the song and America equally. If Carly's eliminated tonight, you can expect to see Randy commit ritual hari-kari in the middle of the stage.

9:15 p.m. Presumptive American Idol Winner David Archuleta is in the Top 10. Duh. He didn't look slightly concerned. Michael Johns, though, is much less certain, though he refuses to back down from his song choice last night. Michael doesn't need to feel regret, because even after an awful performance -- the judges complained about the arrangement, but ignored that he missed half the notes -- he's safe.

9:20 p.m. The only thing more fun than watching the weekly Ford video is watching the Ford video shoot, because that gives everybody the chance to say "Ford" twice as much and to show the Fords twice as much. Following after last night's orgy of iTunes plugs, I'm amazed that even a show as prone to whoredom as American Idol can find new ways to turn each and every episode into even more of an extended commercial.

So who else made the Bottom Three? And who actually went home?

As always, catch the full recap over at our It Happened Last Night blog.
